If you’re deciding which jeans to wear, Rachel Zoe’s approach starts with personal fit—not chasing a trend. In an interview with The Zoe Report, the stylist describes her preferences for wide-leg and flare cuts, while stressing that different people wear denim differently. Her choices can offer ideas, not a universal set of rules.
“I think [denim is] a unique language and everyone should dress for what works for their body type,” Zoe says. “One woman’s wide leg is another woman’s skinny jean.”
Start With the Shape You Like
Zoe says her preferred silhouettes are a wide leg that sits lower on the hip or a more tailored, high-waisted flare. She names Favorite Daughter flares, Éterne boyfriend jeans, L’Agence slouchy wide legs and styles from TWP among her current favorites, along with archival Rachel Zoe Collection denim.
Those are her personal picks, not a guarantee that the same cut or label will suit everyone. If you’re considering a new pair, use the silhouettes as options to compare with the fit you already enjoy rather than as a reason to replace it.
Use Wash to Set the Tone
Zoe likes denim at either extreme: very light or very dark and polished. She says she prefers light denim for daytime and dark denim for evening, pairing the latter with an edgy leather jacket. She also tends to avoid intentionally distressed denim and acid wash, favoring a clean, polished finish.
These are styling preferences rather than rules. If you already have jeans you like, try changing the wash or the pieces around them to see whether you get the look you want.
Build Around the Jeans
For a coordinated outfit, Zoe describes pairing a tailored denim jacket with flared trousers. She also likes denim with a lace camisole, and suggests adding a faux-fur coat, leather jacket or Chanel blazer. For accessories, she mentions a crystal bralette, jewelry and heels.
You don’t need to copy every element. Choose a combination that suits the occasion and your own wardrobe: for example, try a leather jacket with dark denim, or pair flares with a tailored denim jacket.
Before buying anything new, put on a pair you already own and test one of Zoe’s styling ideas. Notice whether the cut feels right and whether the wash and other pieces create the mood you want. Which matters more to you in jeans: the fit, the wash or how you style them?
