Black, In Every Room at Once

It's supposed to be a fall color, and yet here we are in July.

We keep noticing black showing up in places that have nothing to do with each other. It's the color running through Japanese-aesthetic ballet flats from Lemaire, Marsèll, Marni, and Maison Margiela; it's what multiple guests independently chose for a high-profile summer wedding; it's the mini slip dress at evening events in Paris and the all-black formula Kylie Jenner still reaches for on a bike in New York. Five different outlets have logged it in the last few weeks, which is a lot of overlap for a color that has no obvious seasonal reason to be peaking in July.

Part of it seems to be that black stopped meaning one thing. It's minimalist when it's trousers under a white crop top, a little dark-romance when it's a sheer black dress with a textural black jacket, almost maximalist in GmbH's head-to-toe treatment for next spring. That range is probably why it keeps surfacing across such different rooms.

We're drawn to it as a base note rather than a costume; the SAME silk top is the kind of piece that explains why. The pieces we keep coming back to are below.
